# Challenges

The central challenge for sequencers is balancing scalability, efficiency, and decentralization. While centralized sequencers can offer performance benefits, they contradict the decentralized ethos of blockchain technology. Decentralizing sequencers without sacrificing performance or security is a key area of ongoing research and development in the blockchain space.
